To JETs and JTEs...

Hi there and thanks for taking an interest in The TT Forum.

Obviously I have no idea about how much or how little you know regarding this site. Or how you stumbled across it, even. But let me give you a quick run-down on how it came about and why it's STILL dead in here...

In my first year as a JET, I noticed there were plenty of places on the Internet for JETs to gather (for the purposes of discussing, bitching, moaning, sharing ideas, sharing resources, sharing travel tips, etc.)...

And I found out through one of my JTEs that there were some WebRings and mailing lists run by JTEs around the country and some sites with lesson plans and the like.

But never the twain [would] meet.

There was (seemingly) nowhere for JETs to gather and, for example, complain about stuff... and for JTEs to listen and respond to their concerns. And vice versa: There was nowhere for JTEs to air their dissatisfaction with their JETs and receive intelligent strategies from other JTEs and Prefectural Advisors and so on as to how to deal with these problems.

There are all sorts of problems in the working relationship between JETs and JTEs and if they never talk to each other about it, the same problems will persevere.

Likewise, there are lots of brilliant ideas that ARE working. Ideas that almost no one knows about because there's no network through which to disseminate them!

I thought this site would be a great way to pool resources from across ALL of Japan, not just on the local prefectural JET websites, which are great, but not reaching as many people as they could. There's no problem with having resources on your local prefectural JET site AND on another site such as this. Is there?

So this is the reason I installed Simple Machines Forum — wanting the FORUM to be the main focal point of the site — along with TinyPortal, which is a very nice little CMS (content management system).

And then offered it all FREE OF CHARGE just as my way of saying "Thank You" to the JET Program.

So, I built the site in Dec/Jan of... uh... 2007/8 I think. Maybe 2006/7. I really can't remember.

Then I did a bit of promo. Nothing too fancy.

A lot of people I spoke to expressed what a fabulous idea they thought it to be.

IDEA only, it turns out. Sadly, no one wanted to actually CONTRIBUTE.

And, well, I can't grow a community by myself.

So right now the garden is fallow and I've set sign-ups to manual approval to thin out the weeds.

I no longer live in Japan and while I still believe very much in the idea of a place where JETs AND JTEs can come together, apparently not many others do. Boo hoo, huh?

I don't plan to abandon the whole thing just yet (otherwise I would have simply deleted the entire thing), but I have much bigger fish to fry right now.

I've already sunk literally HUNDREDS of hours of my time into setting this site up, configuring software I knew NOTHING about (and barely even being able to write HTML at the time!), wrestling with databases so that it'd function in English, Japanese, and a host of other languages (when I didn't - and still don't! - know the first thing about MySQL!), formatting the layout (which has gone screwy with the most recent upgrade of the software), setting up categories and posting "How To" articles, tinkering with the design, constantly battling the spammers, and a host of other things... to try and get it going... all to no avail.

When my other — frankly, more important — projects slow down, I'll come back and attempt to revive this site ONE LAST TIME because I think it COULD provide a real service to the JET/JTE community.

If you agree that it's got potential, I'd be VERY open to hearing your ideas. You can also spread the word in your local area.

Feel free to sign up and take a look around. You will have to wait for me to manually approve your account, though. And download the QuickStart Guide, below, which will give you an overview.

Until then, take care and enjoy your time in Japan!

All the best,
